Green Technology: 6 Apps to Help You Live More Sustainably

May 08, 2019

It's easy to feel overwhelmed when thinking about environmental issues such as climate change, sustainable products and food waste. Technology can be a valuable tool for raising awareness and sharing information and there are many apps and websites that we can utilise to make easy changes to help the environment. Here are 6 to get you started!

1. Olio

Olio is an app designed to reduce food waste by allowing neighbours, charities, shops and cafes to connect and share leftover food - free of cost. The app has almost a million users and has saved over a million portions of food from going to waste!

2. BlaBlaCar

BlaBlaCar is a carpooling app, linking drivers with spare seats with passengers in need of a lift. Users create a profile and the website uses a rating system so you can get to know your driver a little before meeting. The app has saved over 700,000 tonnes of CO2 by reducing the number of cars making the same journey!

3. Giki

Giki is designed to inform shoppers about companies and their products. It can tell you about the ingredients in food and cleaning products, and the environmental impact the product has. This is extremely helpful if you're conscious about a company's ethics, climate change, pollution and sustainability.

4. Too Good To Go

Too Good To Go is another app working to reduce food waste, this time by offering leftover dishes from local businesses at a cheaper price. They work with independent and chain restaurants and hotels and have already saved over 13 million meals - equating to around 26,000 tonnes of CO2!

5. Ecosia

Ecosia is a search engine which uses their profits to plant trees where they are most needed. They publish their monthly finance reports, use 100% renewable energy to run their servers, and don't sell your data to advertisers. They are committed to helping the environment, economies and individuals, and have already planted over 55 million trees!

6. Refill

Plastic pollution is a currently a huge concern, so Refill came up with the amazing idea to make it easier to avoid buying bottled water. The app allows you to locate the nearest place to refill your water bottle for free - saving both money and a plastic bottle!
